Capital & Credit Celebrates 15 years of providing opportunities through its Scholarship Awards

Nineteen students were awarded scholarships totaling $1.4 million at the annual Capital & Credit Scholarship Awards ceremony on Saturday, September 3 at the Jamaica Pegasus.   This marked the 15th year since the Organization started offering scholarships in 2006, only 2 years after opening its doors.

Guest speaker at the ceremony, President of The MICO University College, Professor Dr. Claude Packer C.D, J.P, provided a source of inspiration and motivation to the scholarship recipients and encouraged the awardees to take full advantage of every opportunity presented to them.

An educator and mathematician, Dr. Packer was able to impart to the students, in a clear, concise and logical manner, how to go about achieving their goals: “Stretch yourselves to the limit to achieve your dream. Believe in your dream and let it work,” he said.

He urged the students to “Find your talent and give that talent a chance”, and to enhance their “problem solving, communication and entrepreneurial skills,” as, he believed that acquiring these skills will allow them to “share in the vision of their school or place of work.”  He also emphasised the need for them to provide good service not just for themselves, but also for their country and families.

Professor Packer challenged the CCFG scholars to “Ask yourself, what have I done in my own life to make a difference?  You must have a love for self, family and community. You must strive for service beyond the call of duty and service above self.”

At the Scholarship Awards, 13 GSAT students were given their awards to attend high schools; one scholarship was awarded for a student to attend the Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf; two for the College of Agriculture Science and Education; two for The Mico University College and one at the University of Technology.

During the ceremony also, three past scholarship awardees were also presented with gifts of computers to aid in their continued educational pursuits.
